About Harel Deutsch
Harel Deutsch, M.D., is a fellowship-trained, board-certified neurosurgeon and serves as director of spine surgery at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute. He specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery, motion preservation surgery and the treatment of failed back surgery syndrome. With nearly 30 years of experience, Dr. Deutsch is recognized internationally for advancing innovative surgical techniques that help patients relieve pain, restore function and return to their daily lives.
Before joining Baptist Health, Dr. Deutsch was a professor of neurosurgery and the co-director of the Rush Spine Center at Rush University in Chicago. Throughout his career, he has been dedicated to advancing spine care through clinical research, physician education and the development of new technologies. He has served as principal investigator for numerous FDA clinical trials evaluating innovative spinal devices and techniques and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications, textbook chapters and presentations. He is also a founding member of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery and founder and board member of the Ghana Brain and Spine Foundation, reflecting his commitment to expanding access to neurosurgical care worldwide.
Dr. Deutsch earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed his neurosurgery residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York before pursuing advanced fellowship training in spine surgery at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta. He remains active in national and international professional organizations and continues to lecture extensively on advances in spine surgery and motion preservation.
Dr. Deutsch believes that the best surgery is often the one that can be avoided. His patient care philosophy begins with maximizing nonsurgical treatment options whenever appropriate. When surgery becomes necessary, he recommends the least invasive procedure that can safely and effectively achieve the best possible outcome. He works closely with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan based on their symptoms, goals and lifestyle, ensuring patients understand every option before making decisions about their care.
Dr. Deutsch is fluent in English and Hebrew and speaks conversational Spanish.
When he is not working, Dr. Deutsch enjoys studying physics and mathematics, traveling and maintaining an active lifestyle through personal fitness.
