Ronald Tolchin, D.O., is a board-certified nonsurgical spine care physician, the chief of nonsurgical spine care and rehabilitation at Baptist Health Brain & Spine Care, the Kalman Bass Endowed Chair in Pain and Rehabilitative Medicine at Baptist Health Miami Neuroscience Institute and the chief medical officer of Baptist Health Rehabilitation Hospital. He specializes in rehabilitation medicine, lower back pain and spine disorders.
Dr. Tolchin received his undergraduate degree from Villanova University and his doctor of osteopathic medicine from Nova Southeastern University. He completed his internship at Suncoast Hospital in Largo, Florida, and his residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he was academic chief resident.
Before joining Baptist Health, Dr. Tolchin was chief of physical medicine and rehabilitation at Miami VA Healthcare System. He is an assistant professor of clinical rehabilitation medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he has taught and mentored medical residents, physical therapists and occupational therapists.
Dr. Tolchin is Board-certified in physical medicine and rehabilitation, with a subspecialty in spinal cord injury medicine and pain medicine. He is also a Fellow of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Tolchin has been part of clinical trials on prosthetics and the treatment of combat-related brain injuries. His research has been published extensively in medical journals and he has presented findings at numerous national physician education meetings.

He already knew I had a big problem and as soon as the examination was done he sent me to Baptist for emergency surgery calling a head for a Doctor meeting in the emergency room. Dr. Tolchin is top notch! He went above and beyond! I was amazed that he reviewed and tested the strength of each bone, including my spine, fingers, toes, arms, and legs. While explaining my cervical X-rays, he showed them to me. He is very patient, understanding, thorough, and professional. As he showed me the exercises (on paper) that we wants me to do, he explained (and hand-wrote) the number of reps/sets that I'm to do. His providing that Handout (with detailed drawings and Instructions) has meant a lot. (Instead, he could have told me to look It up on the Internet-which I may have forgotten to do). In short, his providing the Handout was paramount! In turn, I started those at-home exercises within minutes following that OV. I cannot say enough good about Dr. Tolchin, who's a rare find. He truly cares about his patients and respects the fact that I am not seeking medication; I prefer to resolve my injuries with at-home physical exercise (stretching and strengthening) as much as possible. Over the past 21 years, I've met several Orthopedic Surgeons, and can assure that Dr. Tolchin is now my favorite.

Dr. Tolchin is a very compassionate, warm and authentic physician. I didn't feel rushed and I felt that he was present and listened to me, which is not common in today's healthcare environment. He recognized all the efforts that I have been making to manage the pain in my lower back on a daily basis, including strengthening and stretching exercises on a daily basis. He explained what the next steps should be in diagnosing the problem in my back and why I am experiencing more pain than in the past few years. I am looking forward to my next appointment to get some answers and hopefully successful treatment in the future.
