About Charles N Trujillo, MD
Charles Nathan Trujillo, M.D., is a general surgeon and critical care intensivist at Baptist Health. He specializes in caring for patients with high-acuity, complex surgical needs, including those facing life-threatening surgical emergencies, organ failure and shock. While he has a strong background in trauma and emergency surgery, Dr. Trujillo also performs various routine general surgical procedures.
As a South Florida native, Dr. Trujillo graduated from Florida International University, where he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Dr. Trujillo earned his medical degree from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. He completed his general surgery residency at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center/Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, a high-volume trauma, regional burn center and specialized tertiary care hospital. After residency, he completed his fellowship in surgical critical care at Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.
Dr. Trujillo is dually certified by the American Board of Surgery in both general surgery and surgical critical care. He serves as the medical director of surgical intensive care and is an assistant professor of surgery at Florida International University’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.
Dr. Trujillo believes patients and families deserve clear communication, compassion and steady support, especially during stressful or unexpected medical situations. He takes time to explain each patient’s condition and care plan in a way that is clear and easy to understand. He works closely with various medical disciplines, including surgeons, nurses, hospitalists and other specialists to provide coordinated care for patients with complex surgical and critical care needs.
As an educator and clinician, Dr. Trujillo is an advocate for advancing the field of medicine through innovation and education. He is dedicated to medical education and instilling evidence-based practices in his students and residents to further enhance patient care and outcomes. He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, has served as a reviewer for medical journals and is certified in critical care ultrasound by the Society of Critical Care Medicine. Additionally, he is avidly involved in several professional organizations, including the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, the Association for Academic Surgery, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Latino Surgical Society, the American Medical Association and the Latino Medical Student Association.
Dr. Trujillo is fluent in English and Spanish. Outside the hospital, he enjoys spending time with his family, golfing, watching sports, collecting sports memorabilia, running, swimming, cooking and traveling.
