"There's a lot of people using cryotherapy after their workout to try and reduce the amount of inflammation," notes Dr. Swartzon. "I think that's also a reasonable approach."

By introducing cold therapy immediately following a strenuous exercise session, you can temper that post-workout inflammatory spike, potentially reducing subsequent muscle soreness and shortening your overall recovery time before your next training session.

When to Use Heat: Muscle Preparation and Chronic Pain

Instead, these conditions are characterized by stiff joints, tight tendons, and deep muscular aches. Introducing ice to an already stiff, aching joint can cause the surrounding soft tissues to contract further, inadvertently increasing your discomfort. Heat, conversely, relaxes those tissues.

"Otherwise, I'm really a lot more in favor of the warm therapy," says Dr. Swartzon. "You want to warm up before you start doing your activities. You want the blood flow."

Applying a heating pad or a warm towel to prone areas before a workout helps increase tissue pliability, expands your range of motion, and stimulates local circulation, effectively priming your musculoskeletal system for exercise.

Healing Through Enhanced Blood Flow

Furthermore, certain long-term or structural injuries actually require robust circulation to heal properly. Tendons and ligaments, for example, naturally have a lower blood supply than muscles. Restricting blood flow to these areas with excessive icing can sometimes prolong the recovery process.

"With some injuries, you also want blood flow," Dr. Swartzon explains, highlighting why heat can be a powerful therapeutic tool for tissue rehabilitation.

"There's a lot of studies showing that saunas are great," states Dr. Swartzon. "Saunas can really help you with recovery, not only with your muscles but it can also help with your cardiovascular health."

When you sit in a sauna, your heart rate increases and your blood vessels widen significantly, simulating a mild cardiovascular workout. This systemic circulation boost assists in flushing out metabolic waste from tired muscles across your entire body. Additionally, emerging medical literature suggests that regular sauna use is correlated with broader, long-term longevity benefits.

"They say that if you go into a sauna, you can live longer," Dr. Swartzon adds. "So, I really am in favor of heat over ice much of the time."
