(VIDEO: Watch as one of the final beams at Miami Cancer Institute is hoisted into place, topping off this historic facility.)

A major milestone in the construction of Miami Cancer Institute took place as the final beam was hoisted into position by construction crews, signaling the topping off, or sealing, of the building. From here on out, the focus of construction will shift to the interior finishing process, including the installation of the most advanced technology for treating cancer.

Miami Cancer Institute will move into its new home in the fall of 2016. It will be a destination cancer center, providing multi-disciplinary care for the southeast region as well as Latin America and the Caribbean.

The Institute will also house the region’s first Proton Therapy Center, one of only 13 in the U.S. and 28 in the world.

Hundreds were on hand to sign the beam prior to its journey to become a structural part of an elevator shaft. The Baptist Health South Florida News Team was there. Watch it now.
