When the Miami Central Senior High Rockets took on the Miami Norland Vikings on Friday night at Traz Powell Stadium in a 56-to-6 victory, many likely didn’t notice the doctor walking from one side of the field to the other.
Yet, that doctor – orthopedic surgeon John Zvijac, M.D., from Doctors Hospital Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine – played a role important to both programs and their athletes.
Dr. Zvijac and his partners have worked with Miami-Dade County Public Schools as the official sports medicine providers for more than 20 years, giving on-the-spot care to injured athletes. Additionally, they partner with the schools’ athletic trainers and coaches to keep them aware of the latest advances in orthopedic care and offer student athletes free physicals at the start of the season.
On Friday night, Dr. Zvijac thankfully had time to enjoy the game, as only two minor injuries occurred, prompting him to give advice to help the players work through their pain.
Hear how he manages injuries from the sidelines in his own words.
