Sickle Cell Disease Challenges and Treatments

Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is a lifelong, chronic condition that can lead to intense pain and other health complications. SCD affects about 100,000 people in the United States; more than 90% are non-Hispanic Black or African American. Many people with SCD do not receive the recommended healthcare screenings and treatments.

Baptist Health, in collaboration with our Black and Physicians Business Resource Groups and the NAACP, discusses the effects of this SCD on our community. Baptist Health Sickle Cell Care is offering new hope, with the most advanced and compassionate care for adults with sickle cell disease.

Moderators: Dr. Yvonne Johnson; Dr. Marcus St. John; and Dr. Neil Miransky, who operates Sickle Cell Care at Baptist Health South Miami Hospital.

Guests: Josiah Frierson, a Sickle Cell patient at the Clinic; Harold Ford, president of the South Dade Branch of the NAACP; Dr. Mildred Berry, president of the Sickle Cell Miami Foundation.
