When you experience pain or discomfort, it can be difficult to know when to seek medical evaluation. X-rays play a crucial role in diagnosing injuries by providing a clear view of bones and certain tissues. Recognizing when an X-ray is necessary can help you address potential issues early on.
As Michael Yurubi, D.O., a family medicine and sports medicine physician with Baptist Health Orthopedic Care, explains: “Not all pain requires imaging, but when in doubt, it’s always better to err on the side of caution. If you suspect a serious injury, getting an X-ray can provide peace of mind and guide the appropriate treatment.”
Because muscle strains are fairly common, some people might hesitate to consult a doctor or urgent care for something they think is routine. But seeking expert care is the best way to know if something serious has occurred.
“If you can isolate a specific spot where you have pain, as opposed to having generalized pain, that is concerning,” said Dr. Yurubi, who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and nonsurgical treatment muscular-skeletal system injuries. “Also, if there is weakness, that is a red flag.”
Signs You Might Need an X-Ray
- Persistent Pain If you have pain that doesn’t improve with rest or over-the-counter medication, it could indicate a more serious issue. Pay attention to pain that is sharp, throbbing, or lasts for an extended period.
- Swelling and Bruising Significant swelling or bruising after an injury is often a sign that something may be wrong beneath the surface. These symptoms can suggest fractures or internal injuries, making an X-ray necessary to rule out serious damage.
- Limited Range of Motion If you find it difficult to move a joint or limb without discomfort, this could indicate an injury that requires further investigation. An X-ray can help determine if there are fractures or other issues that need attention.
- Deformity or Misalignment Visible deformities, such as bones that appear out of place, should not be ignored. This could indicate a fracture or dislocation, both of which typically require imaging for proper diagnosis and treatment.
- History of Trauma If you’ve recently experienced an accident, fall, or any trauma, especially to vulnerable areas like your wrists, ankles, or spine, it’s wise to consider getting an X-ray to assess potential damage.
When to Seek Immediate Care
If you experience severe pain, are unable to bear weight on a limb, or have an open wound associated with an injury, seek medical attention immediately. These situations may require urgent evaluation and possibly an X-ray or other imaging test.
Dr. Yurubi advises people to seek prompt care if they heard or felt a pop at the time of injury or if they have severe pain, swelling or discoloration. Consulting a doctor is also important if symptoms do not improve after 48 hours.
Most importantly, people should not hesitate to seek medical care out of fear that they might require surgery. The majority of strains can be treated non-surgically.
Medical treatment for muscle strains is designed to relieve pain and restore range of motion and strength. Muscles and tendons vary in their makeup, so having the injury evaluated is important.
“Muscles and tendons have a good blood supply, and wherever you get blood flow, you have a chance to heal,” Dr. Yurubi said.
Tips for a Smooth X-Ray Experience
- Know What to Expect Understanding the X-ray process can alleviate anxiety. The procedure is quick and painless, typically taking just a few minutes.
- Wear Comfortable Clothing It’s best to wear loose-fitting clothes and avoid metal accessories, as these can interfere with the imaging process.
- Inform the Technician Always inform the technician about any previous X-rays, existing medical conditions, or if there’s a chance you could be pregnant.
- Follow Up on Results After your X-ray, make sure to follow up with your healthcare provider to discuss the results and any necessary next steps.
