BioSkills Lab Prepares Future Surgeons with Real-World Setting at Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute

Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute, part of Baptist Health South Florida, is training future surgeons in a real-world environment so that they are fully prepared before stepping into patient procedures. The BioSkills Lab is an integral part of the Institute’s fellowship program. 

“These Fellows come from different (residency programs) from across the country, utilizing different techniques,” said John Uribe, M.D., chief medical executive, Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute.  “And they’re here to develop and further improve their skills, particularly in arthroscopic surgical techniques.”

The lab provides a simulated surgical setting that allows the physicians to conduct hands-on cadaveric evaluations, surgical education, research studies and clinical trials. The room has operating room viewing capabilities for a seamless learning experience.

“We use the same materials that they use down there in the O.R. (operating room), same equipment, same technology,” said Luis Vargas, M.D., director of Research & Education, Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute. “So, at the end, they feel comfortable when they go to the O.R. to do the same procedure on patients.”
