Javier Perez has always been known for his positive energy, love of his students and his trademark bow ties. His life changed in an instant as Perez was coaching his son’s little league game at Tamiami Park on April 26th.
The South Dade High School Principal was struck by an out of control SUV driven by an alleged drunk driver. He suffered life-threatening injuries and as a result lost both of his legs.

Mr. Perez has spent the last couple of months at the Baptist Hospital Rehabilitation Center as he works his way towards the goal of “walking back in” to the school he loves. He is also longing for the comforts of his house. “I am looking forward to going home soon and spending time with my children and family,” Mr. Perez said.
The South Dade High School community and other organizations have held blood drives and other fundraisers to help Mr. Perez. Supporters have also started a GoFundMe page to help him pay for his medical expenses.
On Friday, September 23rd, Mr. Perez will throw out the ceremonial first pitch as the Miami Marlins host the Atlanta Braves. A portion of the proceeds from each ticket purchased will be donated to a #JaviStrong charity.
