Flus, colds and ear infections are unwanted tag-alongs during the school year. With an activity period that typically begins in the fall and lasts until May, the flu season closely tracks the school year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your children and other family members from common colds, infections and other illnesses, says Barbara Russell, R.N., director of infection control at Baptist Hospital of Miami.

Prevention Tips:

1. Get the annual flu vaccine.
2. Avoid touching your face, especially the eyes, mouth and nose, which are openings in which the virus could enter.
3. Use liquid hand sanitizers if you do not have access to soap and water, especially if you feel as if you are coming down with the flu or have been exposed to the flu virus.
4. Get adequate sleep.
5. Drink plenty of liquids, hot and cold.
6. Cover your nose and mouth (with a tissue or sleeve) when sneezing and coughing.
7. Be aware of where germs can be around you and wash hands often.
8. Clean screens on phone, tablets and other devices.
