Barry T. Katzen, M.D., founder and medical director of Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute, led the launch of Innovation Institute Miami in 2017 as a resource for the entrepreneurial spirit and intellectual talent at Baptist Health. Innovation Institute Miami develops and commercializes intellectual assets for products, devices, tech apps, therapies and delivery models to promote human health globally. Led by Corporate Vice President for Innovation Mark Coticchia, Innovation Institute Miami has four “innovation pillars” it employs toward its mission:

The Discovery Pillar

The Discovery Pillar provides Baptist Health innovators access to an array of intellectual asset-related resources.

The Technology Management Pillar

The Technology Management Pillar aids in the commercialization of life science research and inventions generated by Baptist Health physicians and employees by soliciting, formulating and evaluating opportunities that can be developed into products suitable for licensing or establishing spinoff companies.

The Corporate Innovation Pillar

The Corporate Innovation Pillar establishes partnerships with select corporate enterprises aimed at constructing, developing and bringing to practice high-value medical interventions, including devices, apps and therapies.

The Global Innovation Pillar

The Global Innovation Pillar focuses on licensing Baptist Health’s intellectual property and know-how globally. Its two major thrusts are licensing for new hospitals and global technology development.

Innovation Institute Miami offers access to unique resources and tools for system innovators. These tools include product designers, 3D printing technologies and other “ingredients” to foster design thinking and rapid prototyping. They allow inventors to submit ideas for healthcare advancements, including implantable and non-implantable medical devices, technology development, applications linked to devices and other process improvements with a focus on solving unmet needs in the patient experience.

The Institute has formed strategic alliances with industry partners and others to  carry out the vision.  If you would like more information about how you can participate, contact us.  If you have an idea, submit it.  There is no cost or risk, and there could be significant upside if your idea has merit.

Baptist Health Foundation raises charitable funds to help Innovation Institute Miami address growing healthcare needs in the communities we serve with compassion and excellence. Through philanthropic support, we are dedicated to helping create healthy communities, advancing clinical innovation and providing an extraordinary experience of care.
