This specialized residency in Critical Care is a 52-week training program accredited by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). The purpose of the program is to develop a well-rounded critical care practitioner who can provide high-level clinical care in a variety of ICU settings and effectively share their knowledge and promote learning among students and other residents.

The focus of the program is clinical practice, involving experiences with an interdisciplinary critical care team in medical, surgical, neurological and cardiothoracic ICU environments. The training is coordinated to allow the resident to master each of the disease states established within the ASHP Practice Standards for the PGY2 Residency in Critical Care. Residents will develop skills in managing drug therapy for patients with multiple disease states in the critical care setting, educating students and residents, and participating in clinical research.

Listed below are some of the unique features and patient care opportunities afforded at the practice site:

  • 24 hours/7 days a week in-house Intensivist Service with daily rounding with multi-disciplinary team. Pharmacists attend codes hospital wide and are part of the rapid response teams.
  • Miami Neuroscience Institute on campus with a dedicated Neuro ICU with Neuro Intensivists, Neuro Interventional Radiologists and Neurosurgery in attendance at multi-disciplinary rounds in the ICU. The Joint Commission certified Baptist Hospital of Miami as a Comprehensive Stroke Center.
  • Dedicated Cardiothoracic ICU with employed Cardiothoracic Surgeons where complex hybrid surgeries are performed in conjunction with Interventional Cardiologist and Interventional Radiologists.
  • Miami Cancer Institute (MCI) with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer alliance affords the resident many opportunities in hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant.
  • Pediatric and Neonatology Intensive Care Units (Level II and Level III)
  • Miami Cardiac and Vascular Institute (MCVI): Leading vascular and cardiac research and clinical trials
  • Multi-hospital formulary management system through the BHSF Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee

Our program’s vision is to prepare the resident to be a fully integrated member of the interdisciplinary critical care team as a highly specialized clinician/educator and to provide him/her with the experience necessary to exercise leadership for critical care practice in the health system. The program will empower the graduate with competencies that enable attainment of board certification in Critical Care.
