The Pharmacy Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Residency at Doctors Hospital is a 52-week training program in Pre-Candidate accreditation status by the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP).

The program is designed to develop advanced skills in the areas of internal medicine, critical care, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, and medication safety. The residency builds on previous education and is geared towards developing expert knowledge and skills in managing medication-use systems and optimizing drug therapy.

The resident is integrated into the provision of comprehensive and advanced pharmacy services. During this training, residents will have the opportunity to co-precept Doctor of Pharmacy candidates from various pharmacy schools and are also required to provide various presentations throughout their rotational experiences. The program is designed to train the graduate with the competencies that enable attainment of PGY2 specialty residency training, if desired, and/or board certification in Pharmacotherapy Specialty, as well as achievement of a desired position in the field of pharmacy.

Doctors Hospital will have one PGY1 resident working alongside numerous pharmacy students and approximately 40 employees, our program offers a customized yet standardized approach, preparing clinically skilled pharmacists to work effectively and collaboratively with multiple levels of pharmacy personnel. Residents receive training in optimal medication therapy management/utilization, quality improvement, and research, while developing leadership and team-building skills through collaboration on interdisciplinary teams. We provide a high-tech and personalized patient-and family-centered environment coupled with excellence in quality-of-care measures and patient satisfaction scores

Our program’s vision is to develop the resident into an effective confident clinician and educator, and to enhance professional and clinical skills.
