Advanced Radiation Oncology Clinical Fellowship

The Advanced Radiation Oncology Fellowship at Herbert Wertheim Cancer Institute offers an intensive, 12-month clinical training program designed to cultivate advanced practice skills in specialized treatment modalities. Fellows gain comprehensive, hands-on clinical experience across all major disease sites, developing expertise in history-taking, treatment planning, and plan evaluation. Specialized training areas include proton therapy, MR-LINAC, brachytherapy, radiopharmaceutical therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and clinical trial development, with a strong integration into pediatric radiation oncology.
To complement this advanced clinical mastery, the curriculum dedicates approximately 20% of the trainee’s time to clinically relevant research. This academic component is expected to result in a minimum of two manuscripts and two abstract or poster presentations at national or international meetings. Beyond independent research, fellows engage in rigorous academic didactics, attending multidisciplinary tumor boards, chart rounds, and lectures in radiotherapy physics.
Collaborative mentorship is a cornerstone of the program. Fellows are matched with specific attending physicians based on their selected specialty areas, typically rotating with two to four faculty members over the 12-month period to ensure a well-rounded experience. Furthermore, fellows integrate seamlessly into the department by engaging with medical students, collaborating with research fellows, and working closely with radiation oncology residents to enhance resident education without compromising their clinical opportunities.

Eligibility Requirements and Application Schedule
Eligibility Prerequisites
- Completion of a ACGME accredited (or equivalent) radiation oncology residency program, with board certification, eligibility for board certification, or an equivalent qualification.
Application Requirements
- Proof of completion and award of a medical degree
- Proof of completion of a radiation oncology residency program (or equivalent)
- Board certification, board eligibility, or equivalent (as determined locally)
- At least two letters of recommendation from Radiation Oncologists and additional letters from non-radiation oncologists are optional
- A two-page personal statement outlining the goals and objectives of the advanced training being sought
