The goal of the cancer rehabilitation program at the Miami Cancer Institute is to train physiatrists in the holistic patient centered care that maximizes the health span and quality of life of cancer survivors.

The cancer rehabilitation fellowship program at the Miami Cancer Institute provides physiatrists advanced training in the assessment and treatment of physical impairments commonly seen in persons with diverse types of cancer before, during and after cancer treatments. The aim of the fellowship is to train clinicians in a holistic, multidisciplinary approach that improves the health, outcomes and enhances the quality of life of cancer survivors.

The fellow will have the opportunity to gain experience from and interact with medical, surgical and radiation oncologists in clinical settings as well as at tumor boards thereby expanding their knowledge of advanced cancer treatments and their potential impact on cancer survivors. The fellow will also collaborate with and learn from clinicians in closely related fields such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, nutrition, exercise physiology, acupuncture, massage therapy, palliative care, psycho-oncology, survivorship nursing and integrative medicine oncology, thereby rounding out their education on all aspects of cancer rehabilitative care.

The program also offers the cancer rehabilitation fellow opportunities to gain experience in ultrasound guided procedures, spinal injections, principles of lifestyle medicine, orthotics, research in cancer rehabilitation and quality improvement as applied for the benefit of cancer survivors. The fellow will also have the opportunity to instruct medical students, oncologists, advanced care providers and allied health staff in principles of cancer rehabilitation as well as participate in the writing of scholarly work pertinent to this field.

Eligibility Requirements and Application Schedule

Our program attracts, educates, and retains exceptional healthcare talent to serve the South Florida community. Program participants will be trained in the Baptist Health Way with a focus on quality, inclusion, compassion, and collaboration.

Eligibility Prerequisites

  • Successful completion of residency training program in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR)

Application Requirements

  • Three letters of recommendation including one from PMR residency program director
  • One page essay describing interest in cancer rehabilitation, career goals and how a cancer rehabilitation fellowship will help applicant prepare for a career in the care of cancer survivors
Acceptance and admission to the program is contingent on submission of all requested materials and meeting all eligibility requirements as determined by the program.
