The Baptist Health Fellowship in Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery at the Miami Neuroscience Institute consists of 12 continuous months of training, during which the fellow will focus on the development of clinical and academic expertise in the surgical treatment of movement disorders, epilepsy, and pain. In these 12 months, the fellow will participate in clinic and in surgical cases of stereotactic surgery and focused ultrasound (HIFU) for movement disorders, stereo-EEG implantations/removals, neuromodulation, laser ablations and craniotomies for epilepsy. These cases will occur exclusively at the primary site, Baptist Hospital of Miami. Experience in other areas of functional neurosurgery (pain and radiosurgery) is available during the fellowship, if desired by the trainee.

The fellow will attend our Multidisciplinary Movement Disorders Surgery Clinic, and participate in preoperative patient evaluation, and postoperative patient management and device programming. In this clinic, the fellow will work with movement disorders neurologists, as well as neurosurgeons. The fellow will also participate in pre-and post-operative patient evaluations in the Epilepsy Surgery Clinic and will work with epilepsy neurologists and neurosurgeons. Our fellow will attend all case conferences and journal clubs held by the movement disorders and epilepsy surgery and Miami Neuroscience Institute, in addition to Neurosurgery Grand Rounds and thematically relevant Neurology Grand Rounds, the fellow will participate in sub-specialty training of neurosurgery residents. An on-call responsibility of three 24-hour periods per month will be required.

Eligibility Prerequisites

  • Be a fully trained neurosurgeon.
  • Hold ABNS board‑eligible status or an equivalent credential.
  • Have successfully completed all three stages of the USMLE.
  • Possess a valid and active Florida medical license.
  • Be fully credentialed for practice at Baptist Hospital.
