    Drialys Leal, MS, LAT, ATC

    Program Director

    Drialys Leal, MS, LAT, ATC., is a licensed and certified athletic trainer. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Health Sciences and master’s degree in Athletic Training from Florida International University in Miami, FL. Upon her graduation in 2011, she joined UHZ Sports Medicine Institute and was the Athletic Trainer to Dr. John Uribe, Dr. Thomas San Giovanni, and Dr. Christopher Hodgkins.

    In 2017, Ms. Leal went on to work for DJO Global, LLC as part of their medical sales team. She worked with the bracing and support distributor in Miami and then as the territory manager for CMS, Bone Growth Stimulators.

    In 2022, prior becoming the Athletic Training Residency Programs Director, she returned to Baptist Health South Florida as a Lead Athletic Trainer at the Miami Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Institute, now known as Baptist Health Orthopedic Care.

  • John W. Uribe, M.D.

    John W. Uribe, M.D.

    John W. Uribe, M.D., is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified orthopedic surgeon. He earned his medical degree and General Surgery Internship at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, completed his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of Miami and an Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Hughston Clinic.

    He specializes in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery and minimally invasive surgical procedures for degenerative conditions of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle. His research interests include minimally invasive resurfacing techniques of the knee and shoulder, as well as ligament and tendon restoration.

    Dr. Uribe is the Chief Medical Executive for the Baptist Health Orthopedic Institute; founder member of the UHZ Sports Medicine Institute and founder of the sports medicine fellowship program.

    Dr. Uribe is the Medical Director for the NFL Miami Dolphins and Head Team physician for the NHL Florida Panthers. He is Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery for the Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine.

    Cary B. Chapman, M.D., is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in specializing in conditions of the foot and ankle. He earned his medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York. Completed his Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital, Columbia Campus. Dr. Chapman completed his Orthopedic fellowship in Foot and Ankle Surgery fellowship at Roger A. Mann, MD.

    Dr. Chapman minimally invasive surgical treatments for chronic and acute foot and ankle injuries, ankle arthritis, ankle replacements, bunions, and hammer toe deformities.

    Roy Cardoso, M.D., FACS

    Roy Cardoso, M.D., FACS, is a fellowship-trained, board-certified Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in conditions of the hand and upper extremity. Dr. Cardoso obtained his medical degree from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He completed his General Surgery Internship at the Tulane University School of Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery Residency at the University of California Medical Center, and a Hand Surgery Fellowship Program at the Wake Forest Baptist Health.

    Dr. Cardoso was an assistant professor of the hand and upper extremity surgery department at the University of Miami for three years where he assisted in training residents and fellows. Dr. Cardoso’s clinical interests are surgeries of the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, complex elbow reconstruction, peripheral nerve injury, and brachial plexus injury. He has lectured nationally and internationally on a range of topics including brachial plexus, wrist, and elbow injuries.

    He is fluent in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.

    William A Davis, M.D.

    William A Davis, M.D. is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine. Dr. Davis earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital. He then completed his orthopedic sports medicine fellowship, here with us at the UHZ Sports Medicine Institute, and trained with Dr Thomas San Giovanni of the orthopedic foot and ankle surgery fellowship.

    Prior to joining Baptist Health, Dr. Davis worked for the Musculoskeletal Institute at Duly Health and Care in Illinois as an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon. He served as the academic lead for Duly Health Care’s Sports Medicine group and as the head team physician and medical director for North Central College Athletics in Naperville, outside of Chicago.

    Dr. Davis specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, knee, foot and ankle. Dr. Davis is a team physician for the Miami Dolphins and the Florida Panthers.

    Maria N. Kyriacou, M.D.

    Maria Kyriacou, M.D., is a family medicine physician with a dual board certification in family and sports medicine. She earned her medical degree at Georgia Baptist College of Nursing and completed her Residency Program in Family Medicine at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital. Dr Kyriacou completed her fellowship training in Sports Medicine at the West Kendall Baptist Hospital.

    Dr. Kyriacou specializes in non-surgical treatments for acute, overuse, and chronic orthopedic problems. She has a special interest in sports-related injuries, joint arthritis, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and ultrasound-guided procedures. During her fellowship training, Dr. Kyriacou was involved in stem cell, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and amniotic regenerative orthobiologic therapy.

    She is fluent in English, Spanish, and Greek.

    Luis Vargas, Ph.D.

    Luis Vargas, Ph.D., was an orthopedic surgeon in his home country of Venezuela. Dr. Vargas joined  Miami  Orthopedics  &  Sports  Medicine  Institute  in  1990  when  he  trained  with  John Uribe,  M.D.  He  is  the  coordinator  of  Research  &  Education  at  Miami  Orthopedics  &  Sports Medicine Institute.  Dr. Vargas trains fellows in the Institute’s Bio-Skills Lab, which provides a real-world environment to train future surgeons in orthopedic sports medicine procedures. The state-of-the-art lab simulates a surgical setting and allows fellows to complete hands-on cadaveric evaluations, research, clinical trials, and surgical education.

    Dr. Vargas holds a Ph.D. in exercise physiology and science in sports medicine. He is a frequent speaker at industry events and conferences.  He currently serves as the general secretary of the  International  Society  of  Arthroscopy,  Knee  Surgery  and  Orthopaedic  Sports  Medicine (ISAKOS).  He  is  a  founder  and  board  member  of  the  Latin  American  Society  of  Arthroscopy Knee Surgery and Sports Medicine (SLARD). He is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic  Surgeons,  International  Federation  of  Sports  Medicine,  and  Pan  American Confederation of Sports Medicine.

    John Zvijac, M.D., is a fellowship-trained, Board-certified orthopedic surgeon with subspecialty Board certification in sports medicine. He earned his medical degree at the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine. He completed his Residency in Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Miami. Dr. Zvijac completed his Orthopedic Sports Medicine fellowship at American Sports Medicine Institute.
