Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Renewal Course

PALS provider course is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a child

This one-day (8 hour) course, accredited by the American Heart Association, will refresh the cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to assure high-quality care is provided to seriously ill or injured children. In this course you will enhance your skills in treating arrest and peri-arrest pediatric patients through active participation in a series of simulated cardiopulmonary cases.  The course includes 4 hours of independent online pre-course work and 4 hours of class time. The PALS-renewal is a fast-paced and challenging course designed for experienced healthcare providers refreshing their knowledge and certification. It's intended for those with a working knowledge of rhythm recognition, clinical and pharmacological management.

After completing this course, participants will be able to perform each of the following skills:

  1. Understand and be able to perform the systematic approach  to pediatric assessment, including general, primary, secondary, and tertiary assessments.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating automatic external defibrillator (AED) use.
  3. Use the assess-categorize-decide-act approach to assessment and management of a seriously ill child.
  4. Recognize and manage a child in respiratory distress or failure and/or compensated or hypotensive shock.
  5. Recognize and manage a child with life-threatening bradyarrhythmia, tachyarrhythmia, arrest rhythm.
  6. Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
  7. Demonstrate proper technique for intraosseous (IO) access and fluid bolus administration.
  8. Perform as a team leader or team member in simulated cases.
  9. Appropriately use electrical therapy, including defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion.

Eligibility Requirements and Application Schedule

Our program attracts, educates, and retains exceptional healthcare talent to serve the South Florida community. Program participants will be trained in the Baptist Health Way with a focus on quality, inclusion, compassion, and collaboration.

Eligibility Prerequisites

  • The American Heart Association developed the PALS Renewal Course for currently active healthcare providers (e.g., medical, nursing, emergency medical, or allied health personnel) whose daily occupation or scholastic activities require proficiency in the knowledge and skills of PALS.
  • To receive a PALS completion card, participants must be an active healthcare provider whose training and scope of practice requires a knowledge base that includes the foundations of advanced pediatric life support knowledge and skills.
  • Must have a solid knowledge of basic ECG interpretation.
  • Must possess knowledge of pharmacological concepts and competent administration of drugs used during PALS.
     

Application Requirements

  • Possess a current PALS provider card.
  • Complete the online PALS pretest prior to attending class. 
Acceptance and admission to the program is contingent on submission of all requested materials and meeting all eligibility requirements as determined by the program.
