Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Renewal Course

PALS provider course is designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a child.

Baptist Health has adopted the HeartCode® PALS Online program for certification renewal. You must purchase and complete the HeartCode® PALS Online directly from the American Heart Association to participate in the renewal course using HeartCode® PALS . This program consists of one-day (4 hour) skill session, accredited by the American Heart Association. This session will refresh your skills the cognitive and psychomotor skills needed to ensure high-quality care is provided to seriously ill or injured children. In this course you will enhance your skills in treating arrest and peri-arrest pediatric patients through active participation in a series of simulated cardiopulmonary cases.

The renewal courses are fast paced & challenging courses designed for healthcare providers that either direct or participate in pediatric resuscitation regularly that possess a working knowledge of rhythm recognition, clinical & pharmacological management of pediatric emergencies. The renewal courses are intended for experienced healthcare providers refreshing their knowledge and certification. This course does not have a re-testing option.

After completing this course, participants will be able to perform each of the following skills:

Understand and be able to perform the systematic approach to pediatric assessment, including general, primary, secondary, and tertiary assessments.
Demonstrate proficiency in providing BLS care, including prioritizing chest compressions and integrating automatic external defibrillator (AED) use.
Use the assess-categorize-decide-act approach to assessment and management of a seriously ill child.
Recognize and manage a child in respiratory distress or failure and/or compensated or hypotensive shock.
Recognize and manage a child with life-threatening bradyarrhythmia, tachyarrhythmia, arrest rhythm.
Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.
Demonstrate proper technique for intraosseous (IO) access and fluid bolus administration.
Perform as a team leader or team member in simulated cases.
Appropriately use electrical therapy, including defibrillation and synchronized cardioversion.

Eligibility Requirements and Application Schedule

Our program attracts, educates, and retains exceptional healthcare talent to serve the South Florida community. Program participants will be trained in the Baptist Health Way with a focus on quality, inclusion, compassion, and collaboration.

Eligibility Prerequisites

The AHA limits enrollment to PALS to healthcare professionals who manage cardiovascular or respiratory emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest in pediatric patients.
The American Heart Association developed the PALS Course for currently active healthcare providers whose daily occupation require proficiency in the knowledge and skills of PALS.
Must be an active healthcare provider whose training and scope of practice requires a knowledge base that includes the foundations of PALS knowledge and skills.
Participants must be proficient in:

Electrocardiogram rhythm interpretation for PALS related rhythms
Knowledge of basic airway management
Pharmacological knowledge of common PALS medications
Practical application of PALS algorithms and medications
Effective high-performance team skills
BLS Skills

Application Requirements

Possess a current American Heart Association PALS provider card.
Complete the HeartCode® PALS Online directly from the American Heart Association prior to the live session.

Acceptance and admission to the program is contingent on submission of all requested materials and meeting all eligibility requirements as determined by the program.
