Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Initial Course

The ACLS Two-day courses follow a structured, detailed, and slow-paced curriculum optimal for team members that do not regularly respond to cardiopulmonary emergencies and for initial certification.

This two-day (14.5 hour) course, accredited by the American Heart Association, is for the first-time certification or renewal post cert-expiration. In this course, you will enhance your skills in treating arrest and peri-arrest patients through active participation in a series of simulated cardiopulmonary cases. The course includes 2.5 hours of independent online pre-course work and 12 hours of class time. The online component is a mandatory prerequisite for live class participation. Day one is eight hours and day two is four hours and includes lecture, skills practice, cognitive and practical assessment in a classroom environment. After completing this course, participants will be able to perform each of the following skills:

Recall and demonstrate the basic steps of CPR for adults.
Perform rescue breathing and ventilation with a bag mask.
Explain the importance of early defibrillation.
List the steps common to the operation of external defibrillators.
Demonstrate the proper placement of the defibrillator pads.
Recognize and initiate early management of peri-arrest conditions that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome.
Manage cardiac arrest until return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC), termination of resuscitation, or transfer of care.
Identify and treat ischemic chest pain and expedite the care of patients with acute coronary syndromes.
Recognize other life-threatening clinical situations, such as stroke, and provide effective initial care and transfer to reduce disability and death.
Demonstrate effective communication as a member or leader of a resuscitation team and recognize the impact of team dynamics on overall team performance.

Eligibility Requirements and Application Schedule

Our program attracts, educates, and retains exceptional healthcare talent to serve the South Florida community. Program participants will be trained in the Baptist Health Way with a focus on quality, inclusion, compassion, and collaboration.

Eligibility Prerequisites

The American Heart Association limits enrollment to ACLS to healthcare professionals that actively direct or participate in the resuscitation of patients.
The American Heart Association developed the ACLS Course for currently active healthcare providers (e.g., medical, nursing, emergency medical, or allied health personnel) whose daily occupation s require proficiency in the knowledge and skills of ACLS.
Must be an active healthcare provider whose training and scope of practice requires a knowledge base that includes the foundations of ACLS knowledge and skills.
The AHA recommends that participants have the following knowledge and skills required to complete the course successfully:

Electrocardiogram rhythm interpretation for ACLS used rhythms
Knowledge of basic airway management
Pharmacological knowledge of common ACLS used medications
Practical application of ACLS algorithms and medications
Effective high-performance team skills
BLS Skills

Application Requirements

Complete the Advanced Cardiac Life Support Precourse Self-Assessment and Video Prework with the 2025 CPR & ECC Guidelines logo prior to attending class.

Acceptance and admission to the program is contingent on submission of all requested materials and meeting all eligibility requirements as determined by the program.
