When a person is diagnosed with cancer, often they will prepare by researching options and what to expect during treatment--whether they'll face surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or some combination of care. Somewhere in the process, many patients start thinking about if or when they'll cut their hair or wear a wig, and, if they have breast cancer, whether they'll need special clothing like a mastectomy bra.
That’s where Miami Cancer Institute’s Boutique comes in. Complete with a full line of beautiful bras and other clothing, wigs, skin-care products and compression garments, the Boutique also features a certified mastectomy fitter and a salon specialist and cosmetologist. With more than 50 years collectively in the industry, the Institute employees have the necessary skill and compassion to work with patients facing difficult decisions.
The Boutique is located just off the first floor lobby of the Institute, making it convenient for patients who have come for doctors’ appointments, testing or treatment, or to attend a class. The Boutique is a one-stop shop, making it possible for cancer patients to find everything they need in one location. The first thing a customer might notice upon walking into the Boutique is the wall of bras, in a variety of colors and styles, similar to what they’d find if shopping for intimates at the mall.
To become mastectomy certified, fitters must take a special course and pass an exam given by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics.
When a customer comes to the Boutique for a fitting, they are invited into a private room to talk about their medical history and what they are looking for in a bra and to take measurements. From sports bras to feminine lace bras, the shop has something for everyone. In addition, the Boutique offers a wide range of prosthetic breasts, the mastectomy fitter helps the patient choose the correct size and weight for her body. For women who have had a lumpectomy, there is a breast form with a fiber filling that they can place specifically where needed. There are even stylish bathing suits that accommodate a prosthesis. Getting the right fit is very important as patient may have areas of sensitive skin from radiation therapy or surgery.
Our salon specialist is certified by the Florida Board of Cosmetology. Before she provides a smooth cut ― removing the patients’ hair down to the scalp ― she talks about when they may be ready to make that commitment, as well as how to care for their scalp. For example, patients need a cap at bedtime so their head doesn’t get cold. The Boutique has special medicated shampoos that reduce the itchiness that can come with radiation as well as shampoos and conditioners that promote hair growth once treatment is complete.
The Boutique carries Revlon, René of Paris and Noriko wigs, from short and sophisticated to long and glamorous. They are made of synthetic hair that retains its color and shine and can be cut and styled. In a second private room, our salon specialist cuts hair, helps patients try on wigs and shows them proper maintenance. The customer can come back any time for restyling at no additional cost. Men are also welcome, and toupees are available. The shop also has scarves for those who prefer to be bald or to alternate with wigs.
Wigs range in price from $80 to $250, half the price of most other sellers. And bras are priced between $30 and $60. Patients will also find a line of workout wear, soft robes, clothing from Coolibar with ultraviolet protection and more. A separate gift shop is located next door.
