Changing Lives, One Child at a Time
The Baptist Children’s Hospital Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to supporting the philanthropic efforts of Baptist Children’s Hospital; our comprehensive, state-of-the-art medical facility designed to meet the special health care needs of young patients in a cheerful, warm, family-friendly environment.

The Foundation works with individual donors, charitable foundations and corporations to bring hope to all children in our community and to help care for children whose families could not otherwise afford to pay.  In addition, the Foundation relies upon the kindness and energy of our Volunteer Board Members to support our children's health initiatives.

Your donation to Baptist Children’s Hospital Foundation can be earmarked to a specific project such as new/renovated facilities or help provide funding for special programs.  Every gift makes a difference and your gift could save the life of a child.

Baptist Children's Hospital Programs, Projects and Named Gift Opportunities:

Children’s Emergency Center
Every year, more than 20,000 children are seen in Baptist Children's Emergency Center.  Our new children's E.R., built to accommodate three times the size of our current facility, is scheduled to open Fall 2008.

Children’s Emergency Care Center ($5,000,000)
Children’s Lobby  ($1,000,000)
Infant Waiting Area  ($500,000)
Children’s Trauma Rooms  ($250,000)

Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit ($2,500,000)
Some of our smallest patients require our most sophisticated skills.  If a child is seriously ill or injured, the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit can help.  In addition to highly trained nurses, the units are staffed around the clock by neonatologists and pediatric intensivists, specialists in the care of critically ill newborns and children.

Children and Adolescents Pavilion ($1,500,000)
The Children and Adolescent’s Pavilion is at the heart of Baptist’s pediatric services.  A Child Life Specialist is a staff member who eases the stress of the hospital experience with reading materials and toys.  Menus are tasty and with “child appeal”.  The décor is upbeat with a nautical theme, complete with a playroom for tots and a “ship’s cabin” game room for teens.  The dynamic interaction of dedicated, highly trained individuals, advanced technology and quality services shows Baptist Health South Florida truly cares for kids.

Children’s Outpatient Center ($500,000)
Currently, Baptist Children’s Hospital has no dedicated facility for children undergoing outpatient diagnostic or minor surgical procedures.  Many of these procedures occur in the inpatient Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, which is not an ideal location since it does not offer the necessary support space, such as family waiting rooms, consultation rooms and dedicated preparation and recovery space.

A dedicated area for children with outpatient needs would not only solve overcrowding problems, but would offer families a more relaxed, comfortable environment.  The Children’s Outpatient Center would be staffed by a core team of pediatric intensive care nurses and technicians, and would include dedicated patient preparation and recovery room space, a private physician consultation room and a family waiting area.

Child Life Program ($50,000 - $500,000)
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, child life specialists help address the many psychosocial issues that often arise from hospitalization, including fear, pain, loss of control, separation from parents and death.  Child Life specialists at Baptist Children’s Hospital provide medical play and other therapeutic play activities, present developmentally appropriate information about events and procedures; establish therapeutic relationships with children and parents to support family involvement in each child’s care.

The use of relaxation, distraction and imagery techniques during procedures lessens anxiety and provides non-pharmacological management of pain.  Financial support would permit Baptist Children’s Hospital to expand the Child Life Program by adding additional Child Life specialists, provide additional program materials and establish a small endowment to provide continued support to expand this important and needed service.

Pediatric Imaging Center ($500,000)
With the continued growth of Baptist Children’s Hospital has come a greater need for a dedicated center for pediatric imaging studies.  Although we have dedicated expertise in terms of our clinical staff, led by our pediatric radiologist, our pediatric patients are currently seen in the main Baptist Hospital Imaging Department.  Because the emotional and clinical needs of pediatric patients are different from adults, mixing these two patient populations is not ideal.  The Pediatric Imaging Center with dedicated waiting, diagnostic, and support space, will greatly enhance the quality of the experience our pediatric patients and their families will have at Baptist Children’s Hospital.

Cancer Fund for Children (Various Funding Levels)
The chances of curing some forms of childhood cancer are as high as 75 percent. But for the children and families who must endure it - 6,500 more each year - it consumes 100 percent of their lives. Over the past 40 years, doctors have made remarkable strides in childhood cancer care. But there is much more to be done. The Baptist Health South Florida Foundation has established a fund within Baptist Children's Hospital Regional Cancer Program.

The fund will be a consistent source of financial, emotional and spiritual aid to children with cancer and their families. The needs are many and varied. They include developing a specialized inpatient unit for pediatric cancer patients; funding continuing education for our staff; housing families who come from out of town for care; and providing other practical assistance for children and families in the cancer treatment program. Your generous support and thoughtful participation in this effort cannot be overestimated. What is more, you have made a wise investment - in the quality of life of those who must battle a terrible disease. Thanks in large part to your help, they will not have to do it alone.

Center for Excellence in Nursing
Donations to the Center are used for the education and development of the nursing staff, to award outstanding nurses for their contributions to the profession, to send students through nursing school and to improve patient care with nurse-approves equipment and programs.

Our staff would be delighted to answer any questions you may have about the various children's health funding opportunities. Naming opportunities of $100,000 or more may be payable over an extended period of time by special arrangement.  For more information, please contact Stephen Parsons, CFRE, vice president and chief development officer at 786-596-6535, or E-mail stephenp@baptisthealth.net.
