South Miami Hospital opened in 1960 as a 100-bed hospital in what was then a small suburban community. As the area has exploded
with new residents, and healthcare with new possibilities, the hospital has kept pace – expanding in size and continually updating its services to meet the community’s needs.
South Miami Hospital, currently licensed for 467 beds, enjoys an excellent reputation for quality care in many areas, including:
• Award-winning maternity services.
• Help for infants and children with developmental delays and disabilities.
• Robotic surgery.
• Addiction treatment.
• Weight-loss surgery.
• Diabetes services.
• Comprehensive cancer program.
• A wide range of outpatient services.
• Cardiovascular services at the South Miami Heart Center.
The hospital was recognized as a Magnet Hospital for Nursing Excellence in 2004 and again in 2008, by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a part of the American Nurses Association. It was also on Solucient’s list of top 100 hospitals in the country, based on several quality indicators.
The opening of the Medical Arts Building and parking garage in November 2005 signaled the completion of the hospital's first phase of a $130 million construction project. Other phases planned include expanded Emergency and Surgical Centers, and diagnostic areas.
Resources for Hospital Data
Florida's Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) makes available data on hospital prices and performance on their Internet website at http://www.floridahealthfinder.gov. The data on hospital prices and performance are based on a compilation of charges for the average patient. A patient's bill may vary from the average shown, depending upon the severity of illness and individual care needs.
Baptist Health is committed to quality healthcare and patient safety, participating in a variety of state and national initiatives.
