South Miami Hospital’s new Emergency Center opened in January 2013 as part of a multimillion dollar expansion project to help us continue meeting our long-standing commitment to meet the healthcare needs of the community.
The new Emergency Center is located on the ground floor on the west side of the campus. Designed with open spaces and warm, modern décor and amenities for patient and family comfort, the Emergency Center at South Miami Hospital includes:
27 emergency beds, including 22 private rooms custom-designed by medical professionals to maximize quality and timeliness of care. A total of 39 emergency beds will be available when the last phase of construction is completed by 2014.
A five-bed area where patients with minor wounds and illnesses are treated.
Dedicated trauma and heart attack rooms for stabilizing critically ill and heart attack patients. These rooms feature built-in electronic intensive care (eICU) systems that allow an intensivist and specially trained critical care nurses to monitor patients’ medical conditions electronically 24-hours a day, adding an extra set of highly-trained eyes and ears to assist bedside caregivers.
Physicians, nurses and other caregivers specially trained in emergency medicine and backed by a hospital medical staff that represents every medical specialty.
Located within the Emergency Center is the Heart Attack Unit, accredited by the Society of Chest Pain, the leading international organization that promotes best-care practices for treating heart attack patients. The heart attack team, available 24 hours a day, strives to assess patients quickly and provide the live-saving care they need, including interventional treatment such as cardiac catheterization. They consistently perform angioplasty in less than 60 minutes of a patient’s arrival at the Emergency Center – surpassing American Heart Association guidelines of 90 minutes or less.
