South Miami Hospital’s warm environment and focus on patient care and customer service makes it a great place to volunteer your time. Our volunteers work at the information desk, in nursing units, at the Gift Shop and in various departments throughout the hospital. Volunteering is a wonderful way to learn new job skills, meet new people and feel good about helping others.
Our volunteers come from all walks of life. We have retirees, working professionals, college students and teens fulfilling community service requirements for school.
Teens, ages 15 to 18, are placed in our after school Teen Volunteer or Teen Volunteer Summer program, which runs from June through August. During the summer program, teens come in once or twice a week and work three to four hours each time.
Adult volunteers work a minimum of one shift per week, lasting three to four hours. The Volunteer Services office works to accommodate their schedules and areas of interest. On this site you will find more information on how to become a volunteer at South Miami Hospital.
You may fill out an application online or contact Berkeley Nixon (786-662-8130; email@example.com) to have an application mailed to you. After the application has been submitted, the prospective volunteer will be contacted to schedule an interview. The intention of the interview is to get general information about why the applicant wants to volunteer and to discuss availability. At this time the applicant will have the chance to clarify any questions they may have. They also will be oriented about the requirements which need to be completed prior to beginning their volunteer work.
Thank you for interest in becoming part of our great group of volunteers.
Director Volunteer Services
South Miami Hospital
We accept applications all year round. We expect the volunteer to commit to a weekly work shift (3 to 4 consecutive hours), always on the same day and time, for at least one year.
If you have customer service skills and are interested in public interaction, among the positions we currently have available are: ambassadors, patient escort, book cart, and gift shop. Other positions including clerical work are also available.
College students in the healthcare field must apply early enough to be able to work at least 40 hours within the semester.
The commitment to volunteer needs to be treated as seriously as work or school duties.
At this moment we are accepting applications from college students available to start volunteering in the beginning of the spring semester.
If you want to participate in our 2014 Summer Program, please submit an application between January and June 2014.
Our After School Volunteer Program is currently full. Please return to the "Volunteer Updates" section in the near future, to check if new volunteer opportunities become available.
|Your schedule allows you to commit to a weekly volunteer shift for at least one year, if you are an adult or a whole semester, if you are a college student.
You are able to treat your commitment as a volunteer as seriously as your work or school duties.
You are comfortable having a background check and submitting personal references.
However, if any of the following affirmations is true, please re-evaluate your decision to apply at this time since South Miami Hospital will not be able to meet your expectations as a volunteer:
I hope that volunteering will lead me directly to employment at SMH
I want to gain clinical experience and practice the skills I learned at school
I recently lost someone close to me and I hope that volunteering will help me to go through my grief
I am now looking for full time employment (*)
(*) In this case, wait until you are settled up in your new job and then apply.
